about

I had put aside my prepared bass setup for over a year when in February 2012 I received an email from Gunnar Lettow informing me that our duo project, Fundstücke, would be performing at the Blurred Edges festival in Hamburg in May. Afterwards we secured a spot at the Sonic Circuits festival in Washington DC for September. These tracks reflect investigations of my ever changing live rig from April to September 2012 (our debut release, Fundstücke, was created via file sharing over the internet). While testing and modifying the setup at home I also made studio recordings, which are collage tracks 1 and 3.

This release contains prepared bass (with amplified cardboard pickguard), cassette player, objects, domestic sounds, field recordings, and an array of amplified motors (cd player, small fans, and a milk frother). Tracks 2 and 4 are live solo recordings made on 09/02/12 and 06/30/12 respectively.

Moving Objects

When performing my actions involve playing an instrument as well as touching or moving objects to produce sound. Can scrapping a plastic comb across a rock be considered playing an instrument? In a post Cagian world, where all sounds are now fair game, the lines are blurred. In Spanish when you "play" an instrument you use the verb tocar, which is also means to touch. Our English use of the word "play" is similar to the German "spielen", as in Plattenspieler (record player). Moving objects much more accurately describes what I do on stage and on this recording.

My setup went through a slow metamorphosis over the four months and ten gigs below.

1. Hamburg, Gängeviertel (May) - Fundstücke
2. Berlin, Quite Cue (May) - Fundstücke
3. Berlin, Wendel (May) - Fundstücke
4. Berlin, Naherholung Sternchen (May) - Fundstücke
5. Washington DC, Pyramid Atlantic (June) - Solo
6. Baltimore, Red Room (July) - Duo with Dan Conrad
7. Washington DC, Pyramid Atlantic (Sept) - Solo
8. NYC, Soup and Sound House Show (Sept) - Fundstücke
9. NYC, The Spectrum (Sept) - Fundstücke
10. Washington DC, Atlas Theatre (Sept)- Fundstücke
